Our Staff
Andrew Kimbrell Executive Director Andrew Kimbrell is a public interest attorney, activist and author. He has been involved in public interest legal activity in numerous areas of technology, human health and the environment. After working for eight years as the Policy Director at the Foundation for Economic Trends, Kimbrell established the International Center for Technology Assessment (CTA) in 1994 and the Center for Food Safety (CFS) in 1997. Kimbrell has written several books and given numerous public lectures on a variety of issues. He has been featured on radio and television programs across the country, including The Today Show, the CBS Morning Show, Crossfire, Headlines on Trial, and Good Morning America. He has lectured at dozens of universities throughout the country and has testified before congressional and regulatory hearings. In 1994, the Utne Reader named Kimbrell as one of the world's leading 100 visionaries. Joseph Mendelson, III Legal Director Joseph Mendelson, III joined CTA in the Summer of 1995. He brings a career of significant litigation, public advocacy and environmental grassroots organizing to CTA. Mendelson worked as a staff attorney with the Foundation on Economic Trends and directed the Friends of the Earth's stratospheric ozone protection project. He has authored numerous articles in environmental and legal journals. He has also appeared in numerous media outlets including NBC National News, CNN, CBS News, the New York Times, and the Washington Post. His writing has appeared in numerous publications including the Ecologist, Boston College Environmental Affairs Law Review, Environmental Law Reported, and the Utne Reader. Lorin Kleinman Office Manager Lorin ensures the efficient operation of the organization. She acts as HR Director, oversees bookkeeping, is in charge of payroll, drafts revisions to the policy manual, selects new equipment, keeps our outside IT consultant on his toes, and makes sure a copy of all data is kept off-site in case the building burns down. Before she came to CFS, she worked for seven years at the Takoma Park/Silver Spring, MD Co-op, where she managed a team, directed HR, oversaw a staff of seventy as part of a two-person interim management team, and served on the Board; and gained a deep appreciation for proper management, good food, and sustainable agriculture. Jaydee Hanson Policy Director Jaydee Hanson directs the CTA's work on human genetics, including work on stem cell research, cloning, and gene/embryo patenting. He also works on the convergence of biotechnology and nanotechnology.Prior to coming to CTA in 2004,he served as The United Methodist Church's staff director of genetics and bioethics issues from 1981 to 2004. From 1991 to 2004, he also was the legislative director for the church. Mr. Hanson has testified to many state and US congressional hearings on human cloning, animal and gene patenting, and related issues. He coordinated the 1995 religious leaders' statement opposing gene and animal patenting, which was endorsed by over 200 leaders from every US religious tradition. Hanson has served on many committees related to public policy and genetics. He chaired the National Council of Churches' Exploratory Commission on the New Human Genetics and chaired the National Council of Churches' Eco-justice Working Group biotechnology taskforce. He is a member of the World Council of Churches' genetics and nanotechnology committees, which developed new policy for that world-wide body of 400 denominations. He served on the American Association for the Advancement of Science's Science and Religion Advisory Committee and the Ecumenical Roundtable on Science and Religion.
